Mountains of energy

A trip to the region of South Tyrol, Italy’s most virtuous green energy producer

On air at 4 p.m. on Friday 23 December on Rai Tre

The increase in global warming and the ongoing climate emergency call for virtuous and farsighted choices in terms of energy production and use, as well as faster implementation times. With “Montagne di energia”, which will air at 4 p.m. on 23 December on Rai Tre, Rai Documentari examines the path and choices taken by South Tyrol, which has combined an effective response to energy needs with environmental protection. Written and directed by Liza Boschin and Yuri Massaro, the documentary is produced by Rai Documentari in collaboration with Rai Com, Rai Alto Adige and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

South Tyrol is a “Green Region” of Italy because of its strong specialisation in renewable energy and its focus on sustainability. This is evidenced by the fact that it produces twice as much energy as it consumes, 60% of which from renewable sources. The target is to raise this figure to 90% by 2050.

Quality of life, respect for the environment, careful and informed use of natural resources. The documentary presented by Nastro d’argento award winning actor Nicola Nocella looks at the South Tyrol recipe for sustainability. From Longiarù to Lake Resia, from the Val D’Ultimo dam to Prato allo Stelvio, Nicola meets a mountain guide, a dam warden, a hydroelectric manager, a farmer and lots of other figures to learn about the many different ways of producing green energy.
